About Us
Hannah’s Cottage Bed and Breakfast is an exclusive-use, self-contained cottage,
situated on a hilltop with expansive rural views across the
Onkaparinga Valley.
“Botathan”, the name of our farm, consists of
about 20 acres of land, disposed as gardens and
paddocks, and you are free to wander at leisure.
However, we do ask that you please shut any gate
that you open.
Our farm animals (which usually include, steers, sheep and horses) are relatively friendly but please remember that these are not all fully tame animals. See our Stories page to find out more about them.
We provide carrots in the cottage (and instructions) so that you can feed the horses. They’ll enjoy it as much as you will!
Our floodlit supergrass tennis court is also available for use from 9am to 9pm.
We supply racquets and balls but please bring appropriate sports shoes.
If you prefer golf, the Oakbank Golf Club is nearby and is open to the public from 9am to 2pm daily except Saturdays. Buggy and club hire is available.
You may like to have a picnic down by the dam. We can provide a picnic basket, plates and a rug etc for your use. See our Indulge page for information on delicious hampers that you can order in advance. Alternatively, you may like to make use of the barbecue and dine alfresco under the pergola.
See our “wine .. dine .. explore” section for things to do off the property.
Whatever the season you can enjoy walking around the property, taking in the views, while you give your spirit time to catch up with your body. See our Stories page for photographs of the property during the various seasons.
Environmental sustainability
As we all know, the environment is very precious and is really under threat. Our actions as individuals have a significant impact on the environment.
We are proud of our lovely environment so we try, where practicable, to lessen our impact and hope to be able to pass it on in better condition than when we came here. For this reason, we always encourage our guests to do the same.
At Hannah’s Cottage we
- use rainwater only (but provide spring water for drinking) so ask guests to think about their water use
- have a dish drawer for washing dishes but encourage guests to only run it when it is full
- have a well-contoured spa bath that uses less water than many others
- recycle all bottles, cans and paper waste from the cottage
- have outside lights on a movement sensor so that they do not need to be on all the time
- provide wood for the fire from fallen limbs on our property
- have a 600 tree wood lot for timber but have never had to use it
On our property we have
- spent years removing the refuse found on the property, responsibly disposing of tin, wire and old tyres
- worked hard to remove various woody weeds such as gorse and broom
- tried to keep chemical use on the property to a minimum
- grown many native local species from seed (we are members of Trees for Life) and planted them out
- encouraged the growth of self-sown natives
- planted trees to provide bird corridors for native wildlife
- an ongoing battle with blackberries- if only we had more time!
Although we have horses and cattle on the property we
- have replaced old fencing and divided paddocks so that we can rotationally graze
- collect their manure regularly to reduce nutrient run-off
- on-sell the manure for fertilizer
Overall we always
- select white goods that have a good energy rating or efficient water use rating
- use environmentally friendly cleaning products
- recycle everything from our own home
We hope one day to be in a position to make use of solar energy and to recycle our grey water.
We undertake all these actions so that the beautiful environment that can be seen around Hannah’s Cottage can be enjoyed by our guests again and again on their stays. With your cooperation we can leave our environment a better place for future generations also to enjoy.
